A Beach's Gift to You

While most people visit the beach for the warmth of the sun, the thrill of the waves, or the joy of a friendly game of volleyball, there is so much more happening beneath the surface.

In this blog, we will uncover some of the surprising benefits the beach offers your mind and body, along with creative ways to bring coastal serenity into your own home.

A Beach’s Gift to Your Body

The beach is a beautiful reminder to be grateful for simple yet powerful gifts that nature so effortlessly provides. Here are just a few gifts that the beach offers your body:

1. 🌞 The gift of bone health. Vitamin D is needed for our bodies to absorb calcium and promote bone growth.

2. The gift of immune health. Vitamin D is essential not only for our bone health but also for neutralizing the damaging effects of inflammation. Vitamin D also boosts our body's production of microbe-fighting proteins important to strengthen our immunity. The healing salt detoxifies our body and helps fight acne-causing bacteria.

3. The gift of skin health. The sand and salt are natural exfoliants for our skin. They remove dirt and dead skin cells, and uncover fresh new young cells underneath, leaving your skin looking fresh and healthy. The salt helps restore the protective barrier in our skin and helps it hold hydration. The saltwater helps restore our skin's natural pH balance and provides vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that our skin needs to stay clear and healthy.

4. The gift of respiratory health. Inhaling the salts in the beachy air helps to thin the mucus along our respiratory airways, making it easier to breathe. Salt ions purify the air and may increase our lung capacity and reduce physical ailments.

5. The gift of relaxation. The combination of beach features helps create an image of relaxation. The beautiful sky, in combination with the sounds of the beach waves, the smell of the air and the taste of the ocean mist, the feeling of the sun's rays hitting our skin, the feeling of the salts and sand massaging our feet, and toes all create this beautiful experience.

No Beach? No Problem!

If a trip to the beach isn’t possible—whether due to distance, physical limitations, or life’s demands—don’t worry, you can still bring the essence of the shore to you.

Get the benefits of "The Sun" 🌞

  1. For people who don't get any sun exposure — it should be perfectly fine to take a supplement of 1000 to 2000 IUs a day based on your daily dietary intake.

  2. If you are not near the beach, another way to get your dose of Vitamin D is infrared (red) light. These can be found in gyms, spas, or salons. Some chiropractors and massage therapists may also have them. Doesn't hurt to ask 😉. When you ask, ask about the cost, but also ask if they have any package deals!

Get the benefits of "The Salt"

  1. Salt rooms are becoming growingly popular, and they usually have groupons and packages or monthly memberships.

  2. Sea (Himalayan) Salt inhalers are great if you are experiencing asthma or breathing difficulties from a cold, flu, or allergies. You can find these for $15 on Amazon.

  3. You can make your own salt scrub by putting a pinch of ground Sea salt in your facial wash.

Get the benefits of "The Relaxation"

  1. You can find the sound of the ocean right on your phone. In addition to the sounds of the ocean, pink noise, and white noise are also very relaxing.

  2. Put some crushed Himalayan salt in the tub and take a nice warm bath

Dr. Mary's Pearl of Wisdom: You can “go to the beach” in your home.

Draw a lukewarm bath and sprinkle some sea salt granules. Do not disturb your phone and find tunes to ocean waves. Take a nice deep breath in and breathe out today's negative thoughts. Close your eyes and meditate on the ocean.

“Go to the beach” through the senses - Think about what the beach looks like, sounds like, smells like, feels like, tastes like. Take in the daylight, moonlight, sunrise, or sunset, and appreciate the way the lights reflect and refract on the water.

For 5 minutes, see where you go in your mind and body… acknowledge it… appreciate it… take a deep breath in. Breathe out and open your eyes.
